Australia: The Great Barrier Reef


One of Australia’s most beautiful natural gifts, is the Great Barrier Reef. The Great Barrier reef is the world’s largest coral reef. The reef is over 500, 000 years old,¬†stretches more than 1,600 miles, and covers an area of 133,000 square miles. The coral reef is made up of over 600 islands and 300 coral cays ( coral cays are the¬†sandy islands on the surface of a coral reef). ¬†On the reef, it has a diversity¬†amount of marine life.

The Great Barrier Reef is home to over 1500 species of fish, ¬†215 species of birds,¬†30¬†species of whales and dolphins, 360 species of corals, 1500 species of sponges, and many more. So, about¬†10 percent of the world’s total fish species can be found within the Great Barrier Reef. The reef is a beautiful place to visit , it is sunny all year round , around 2 million people visit each year, and its is the best place to visit for people that like to go snorkeling, scuba diving, and sight-seeing.
